What exactly is an Expedition?

An Expedition is a limited time game mode in No Man's Sky. It's usually, though not always, built on the foundation of the normal game mode, and its theme tends to tie into whatever recent update or feature Hello Games has just added.

Unlike the standard modes where you're free to explore and do whatever you want at your own pace, an Expedition is objective driven. You're given a series of tasks to complete within the time window that the Expedition is live.

When do Expeditions appear?

They usually pop up not long after a major update or a new feature is added to the game. So if you see a big patch drop, keep an eye out for an Expedition following shortly after.

Why should you play one?

I can only speak from my own experience and what I've seen from other players, but most people jump into Expeditions for one of two reasons:

  1. The rewards. This is the big one. Expeditions give you unique rewards that you can't get anywhere else.
  2. The challenge or change of pace. Sometimes it's just nice to have a structured goal instead of the endless freedom of the main game.

If neither of those appeals to you, that's fine, but I'd still say give one a try when it's available. You might surprise yourself.

How to start an Expedition

There are two ways to begin.

Method 1: Start a New Game

From the main menu, start a new game file and select "Expedition" when prompted. Simple as that.

Method 2: Use the Current Save

If you want to carry some of your existing progress over, load an existing save and head to the Space Anomaly. When you get there, go to the back of The Nexus to find the Expedition Terminus. Try it out, read the directions and you will be able to bring a few things with you on the Expedition. When you're ready, hit "Start."

Important notes for Method 2:

You can switch back to your original save file at any time, but to return to your Expedition save, you'll need to go back to the Space Anomaly and use the Expedition Terminus again.

You must have access to the Space Anomaly during the Expedition if you want to retrieve anything you stored in the Terminus, including a copy of your multi-tool and starship from your original save at the time you started.

Copying your multi tool or starship costs Nanites.

The Basics of an Expedition

If you've done an Expedition before, the first thing you'll probably do after starting is pull up your task list and see what's ahead.

If this is your first time, here's what you need to know: there are five phases, and each phase contains eight tasks. That's 40 objectives total.

You can tackle these tasks in any order you like, as long as they're available and visible. Some rewards from earlier tasks will help you with later ones, so it's worth reading through everything carefully before you dive in. If a task is confusing, try clicking on it and checking the mission log, sometimes the game gives you a hint. Sometimes it doesn't.

Phase rewards and how they work

When you complete all eight objectives in a phase, you get a reward. This is the main draw for most players, and the best part is, these rewards are shared across all your save files.

Let's say you have three different saves across different game modes. You can access those Expedition rewards on every single one of them. Just head to the Space Anomaly and talk to the Quicksilver Synthesis Companion.

Finishing the Expedition

Once you complete all five phases, the Expedition is done. What happens next depends on how you started it.

If you used Method 1 (new game): The game automatically converts your Expedition save into a normal game save. You keep everything you earned.

If you used Method 2 (existing save): The game will tell you that you've finished and prompt you to return to the Space Anomaly. Go back to the Expedition Terminus and follow the same steps you did when you started. You'll be able to retrieve anything you stored there, including a copy of your multi tool and starship from the Expedition, though copying those costs Nanites.

One more thing: You can't replay the same Expedition on the same save file. If you want to do it again, you'll either need to use a different save that hasn't done it yet, or start a fresh game via Method 1.

A Note on Community Courtesy

There's an unspoken rule among No Man's Sky players: if you build something during an Expedition, other players can use it. Since Expeditions often put everyone on the same travel route, this can be a huge help.

Whenever I play an Expedition and build something useful, I try not to delete the save file until the Expedition is over, just in case my base or a random structure ends up helping someone else along the way.

Final Thoughts

Expeditions are a fantastic way to shake up your No Man's Sky experience. They give you clear goals, unique rewards and a feeling of being on the journey together with the community. Whether you're a veteran looking for a new challenge or a newcomer wanting a guided tour of the galaxy, there's something here for you.

So next time an Expedition drops, don't be scared, jump in, see what there is to see and maybe leave a little something behind for the next traveller.
