If you're reading this, you're probably one of the many people who've tried to launch Prototype 2 only to be greeted by a crash before you even see the main menu. It's a known issue, and unfortunately, there's no single fix that works for everyone. That's why I've put together this guide, a collection of solutions that have worked for different people. Try them one by one until you find the one that works for you.
First startup crash solution
Download the missing files (i can't give you a link), there are three of them: cementfiles.p3d, skuinfo.p3d, and audio.p3d.
Replace your existing game files with these new ones.
If this solution doesn't work, move on to the next one.
Second startup crash solution
Go to the Properties of the game in your Steam library.
Click on "Verify Integrity of Game Files" under the Local Files tab.
Check if it says "Failed to verify 1 file" every time you try to verify integrity. If it does, that basically means the game isn't downloaded properly.
Click "Browse Local Files" and go to the properties of the entire Prototype 2 folder:
Turn off "Read-only" in the folder properties, then try running the game directly from the folder. You can also try running it as administrator.
If this doesn't work, try the next solution.
Third startup crash solution
Press Windows + R to open the Run Command.
Type in devmgmt.msc and press Enter. This will open Device Manager.
Find "Human Interface Devices" and then "HID-compliant consumer control device."
Disable "HID-compliant consumer control device" and try running the game. If it still doesn't work, you can try disabling the other HID devices as well.
If the game works now, don't forget to re enable those HID devices after you're done playing. It's highly recommended to turn them back on once you quit the game.
Fourth startup crash solution
Go to the Properties of the game in your Steam library, just like in the second solution.
Click "Browse Local Files" and go to the properties of the entire Prototype 2 folder.
Right click on prototype2.exe, go to Properties, and then the Compatibility tab.
Disable fullscreen optimizations and check "Run this program as an administrator."
Fifth startup crash solution
If you have a processor with too many cores, open Task Manager.
Go to the Details tab and find steam.exe.
Right click on steam.exe in the Details tab and set core affinities.
In the small window that appears with the list of CPUs, have only eight of them enabled. If eight doesn't work, try four. The game doesn't support more than eight cores.
Save the changes and test if the game works correctly. Don't forget to change the cores back to how they were once you're done playing.
Sixth startup crash solution
Disconnect your keyboard and mouse from your computer.
Reconnect them after the game loads the main menu. You'll need to run the game and then immediately disconnect them.
You can also try disconnecting other USB devices. Everything can be reconnected after you safely reach the main menu.
Thanks for reading
I hope something in this guide helps you get Prototype 2 running. If you know of any other possible solutions, let us know in the comments. If I find more fixes I will add them here for all to see.
