Ammo, Suppressors and Fulton Extracts: Just Buy More Already

To start with your ammo and suppressor durability will be pretty low. A handful of shots each. Even as you get more of each through researching and later gunsmithing you will quickly run out. What are you to do? Use a handful of tools for the six guys you can shoot and then the next four you can use your throwable or deployable tools on?

No. Just open your iDroid and order a drop picking up new ammo, suppressors and most crucially: Fulton balloons. Yes it costs GMP. It does not cost much if you are packing light on equipment. You are still coming out in the black no matter what. Items that you bring back or do not have restocked are basically refunded,. While it gives you a cost it will be mitigated overall for what you did not use up.

You can absolutely get by with nothing. What you scavenge up.. Discarding 90 percent of the games tools is a lot less fun than getting to enjoy your tactical espionage action. The game would not make you research much stuff if it did not want you to use it in the field. This is a way to save GMP in general too. Only equip in your loadout things you expect to use much every mission without fail. If you only use it sometimes do not bring it. When you need it deploy whatever item you need as a single drop.

You get a GMP extra cost for the mid-mission delivery but it is way less than carrying expensive stuff every time you deploy to free roam. You can not get resupplies in FOB missions. Anywhere else if you need it drop it. At trust levels with Quiet she will even sometimes drop it for you. Not always in a place that's viable or possible to get to but she tries.

You were not going to stop looting just because you ran out of balloons to ship them home were you? Just drop balloons and strip the place to the ground if you want to.. As long as there is only a couple guys left if you run out of suppressor a gunshot will make people look around to your location but they will not necessarily see you right away if you move around and do not fire from somewhere they can immediately turn to see you.

If you just need to take one or two guys before you can reach your ammo resupply you might be able to pull it off. Oh. Keep an eye on your Fulton distance. Enemies can hear a Fulton extraction from around 30 meters away. If they hear it they will grow suspicious and might even see it rocket away if they are looking in the right direction. Past 30 meters. You are fine. Enemies who are conscious may scream louder when they are sent flying.

Do not be so serious lethal is okay. Kojima is a person, someone who is ardently anti-war but who still really loves military hardware for being cool even if he strongly disapproves of what it is actually used for. So it is quite typical for his games that non-lethal is the option.. Yeah non-lethal is very viable.. Lethal is still a very viable option too.

Do not let the morality of the situation hold you back too much. Miller even tells you much outright: if that involves wetwork so be it. Some day eventually you will have the skills and importantly the upgrades, to get through without killing anyone without being detected.. The game will reward you for that with bonuses for perfect stealth.

If you happen to need to shoot someone to keep them from waking up and sending the whole base on alert because you are just not that fast then do so. The game will not demonize you for it unless you go really really far as long as you only happen to take out whoever is in your way one way or another and do not go out of your way to do a genocide on everyone present you will still have a rising heroism score in the end.

Besides lethal tools still have some options, like breaking lightbulbs and glass or maybe turning people around to investigate a silenced shot. You can also shoot them in the head with a weapon to knock their helmet off then nail them in the newly exposed face with a nonlethal weapon, ideally a tranq for a quick nonlethal KO. You are going to have to be quick on the draw. You will get there.

Also lethal can be nonlethal of. You may have noticed you have a group you can level up with dudes with the appropriate skill. What does leveling that up do? What is it for? Well this, mostly. You can shoot a guy in the leg. Have him go down rolling around on the ground in pain incapacitated.

Some badasses will be on the ground struggling, but still pull their pistol and try to shoot you while they are bleeding out. Respect. Still kick them while they are down to knock them out. Go ahead. Fulton extract them. When they are partially wounded you have a percentage chance of failure where you will lose them.. Ranking up your medical team will increase your odds.

Sure having a chance to not kill them is obviously worse than having a 100 percent chance to not kill them with weapons but it is so much easier to get them out of your way with guns that are better at knocking them down so do not be afraid to take the easy option if they are a bonus and not someone you absolutely need to have.

Broad side of a barn, tranq tactics. As mentioned you do not have to kill an enemy with a headshot to down them. If they fall down for long to be Fulton'd out that is good enough.. You also do not need to worry about headshots with tranq weapons either. Yes headshot tranqs are often the option but they are not necessary.

Tranqs if they land will eventually work. Does not matter where they hit, long as it does not bounce off armor. You will learn to distinguish the sound of a landed hit to a hit the audio cues are distinct. A headshot will put them to sleep. A shot to the chest may put them to sleep after a ten delay. To the foot might be ten or fifteen seconds.

However tranq effectiveness is somewhat tied to the heartrate of the victim. What does that mean for you? It means that if you have someone who is going to fall over when their tranquilizer takes effect them being surprised is going to make that timer dramatically shorten. You may want to take advantage of this.

Let us say there are three guys who are all standing next to each other. You can not just headshot all three of them in a row they are all watching each other and your dinky little W. Su has a fire rate. So shoot them all in the leg or torso. Wait. They will probably react,. They will swat at themselves thinking it is just a mosquito.

Once you hit the guy you have got a time window to hit as many others as you want and when people start falling over one after the other in sync anyone who sees them fall over will be alarmed have a sudden heart rate spike and will fall unconscious themselves a few seconds later. You can also alarm them ways throw a magazine shoot the environment behind them have them catch a glimpse of you and move to get a better look.

Just learn how fast it will take effect and try to work around that timing. If they are facing you toss a magazine behind them from behind a corner. They will only turn around for a seconds but that is more than enough time to get a couple of them tagged to fall over in a few seconds. Sure it might take a while for the one to go down but that just means you have a while to ensure every guard in sight has a little white to confirm the hit.

Remember, tranqs are a one shot KO that lasts a while no matter where you hit them.. Having multiple people all fall over more or less at the same time can be way better than having them instantly fall over one at a time only to have them stumble over each other and sound the alarm.. You can always shoot them multiple times to speed it up too if they have got a helmet that foils headshots.

One shot to the chest. They will fall over in about fifteen seconds. Two shots to the chest. They will fall over in about three. Do not forget you can just have suppressors and ammo mailed directly to you from the sky if that is what it takes. Capture cages it is real estate. These are money. Well they convert carrots into GMP. You know what I mean.

More importantly each one placed increases your heroism for free at the start and end of any mission or chopper extraction. As heroism increases the quality of your recruits how much you have directly influences how fast Mother Base grows and upgrades. This is basically powerleveling. How these work is a little unclear so here you go.

You can place, up to 8 total regardless of how resupplies you call in.

When you are on a mission in a helicopter or you start a mission from free roam you will capture an animal. The animal cages will catch animals automatically when you do a mission transition, start or finish.

You will never see the animals get caught it just happens. Where you place the cages affects what kind of animal they catch. They have a 100 percent catch rate.

You get paid in heroism and GMP for every cage you place. There is no reason not to put down a bunch of cages on top of whatever else you are doing in a mission. Unless you run out of Black Carrot that is.. If you run out of carrots it is not a big deal. They are only used for cages so you used them in the possible way. And you can always find carrots they are pretty common.

You can put down up to eight cages every mission. You get free heroism and GMP. It is an idea.

Maybe you should not bother upgrading the cages though. The main benefit is that you get to find kinds of animals but for the most part it just increases the amount you can carry. You can only place eight cages though.

Your real income comes from FOBs. FOBs are your source of renewable income. You can beat the game without doing them. It will be a worse experience. You will eventually run out of money if you do not do FOBs after some expensive research later in the game.

FOBs are the real way to get resources in the amounts you need to upgrade your platforms. You will have to raid players bases for materials and money but that is okay. It does not really hurt them. Occasionally they will raid you back.. It will not really hurt you either.

There are some FOB-mission-only items you can research and deploy with the FOB events but for the most part Online Resources are like a bonus multiplier. It is money it is basically an inflated income value that you do not actually use for much.

You do not use Online Resources for much. If you steal them from other people or have them stolen it is no big deal. You secure resources for the solo game and the game throws in extra Online Resources used mostly for Online Content. It is a bonus nobody is actually taking resources from your single-player game.

FOBs are the way to get GMP income. Repeating missions gives you less GMP for completing them so it is better to do FOB missions.

There is an Espionage Score that goes up as you win FOBs. As you complete them the kind of FOBs presented to you will change. Eventually FOBs with no defenses will stop showing up. You will only have the option to take on places that care about their security.

So do your best. Remember that while you get heroism for killing soldiers on FOBs you gain a lot for completing the mission. If you can sneak through with no detection and no kills you get a bonus.. If the FOB is too difficult do not worry about it. Just do what you came to do and leave.

One thing that is hard is the flying drones. You can shoot them down with a silenced weapon. They hit the ground and explode and set off an alert. The solution is to shoot them down over water so they disappear without anyone noticing.

You can beat the game without doing any FOBs. You will be poor in the late game. You will spend much on research so it is better to do FOBs. You will have the resources to afford the tools that make things fun.

You can also spend staff to sabotage an FOB right before you run it. This can make it easier. It is not always worth it. It costs GMP. It will eat into your earnings.. Sometimes it is worth it when you get caught out early in your FOB career.

The Man Who Sold The World is about GMP Reserves. You are a hoarder. That is okay. Many people will tell you to Fulton everything in sight. They are right. You do not need all that stuff. You can if you want to.

The best thing to stockpile is semi-precious metals. You use these for some things. When sold in bulk you get a lot of cash for it. Sometimes raw GMP is what you need.

Damage Decoy and Fully Armored Enemies are a pain.. Your tools often have uses beyond their first impression. Decoys, when they inflate will briefly knock out enemies. There are kinds of non-lethal knockouts and various sources of STN last longer than others.

Heavy Armored Enemies are a pain. These guys are almost immune to bullets. Non-lethal rubber rounds will put them down though.. A decoy inflating in their face is an instant knockdown.

The cardboard box is a meme. It is a meme for a reason. This thing has a lot of uses. You can sit out in daylight with this thing over your head and people will ignore you. You will be visible crawling or rolling around than you will be in the box but if enemies are right up next to you a box will let them patrol right past.

The box is reusable most items are consumed soon as you activate them. If you are prone across the ground, in a box with the folds opened you can burst out of the front of the box leaving it in place. You can not retrieve it after this consuming one of your boxes. It acts as a lure. With the poster soldiers can be distracted by it for much longer.

When you are in a situation what happens next depends on the context. If you are in the box they will find out about you.. You can get out of the box by pointing your gun at them and if you shoot them in the head they will not have time to alert others.

This is usually close enough for you to hold them up if you speak their language and it can be successful. However if the enemies try to resist by going for their gun they will do that as usual. If you see that they are not cooperating you should just shoot them in the head.

If your gun has a flashlight you can shine it in their face. It will stun them for about two and a half seconds, which is enough time for you to put away the box and use it again without wasting it and then you can grab them and interrogate them or choke them out.. You can do both. If you point your gun at them while they are blinded they will be held up.

Just waiting is also useful if you are waiting for the enemies to fall asleep from a tranquilizer shot.

You can even get back into the box. Put it away saving it for later. You can also get out of the box. Take them down with CQC and maybe even do a multi-person CQC chain if there are two enemies side by side. However this will waste the box. You will not be able to use it again.

Also you can turn around while using your binoculars to change the direction of the box without the enemies noticing if you want it to face a way or you can look out of the hole in the side to use your scanner without being detected from far away.

If the box is just lying there without you in it nothing will happen and it will just be a distraction. Unlike the magazine this is a distraction so it will wait for the enemies to come close and see it rather than making a noise that they can hear.

Maybe something will be inside the box. You could put a cardboard box over a decoy. When the enemies come close and open it you can activate the decoy and it will punch them in the face knocking them out for a short time.. You can put any other triggered item under the box and it will not be seen until the enemies come close and remove the disguise.

If you have a dead body and nowhere to hide it you can put it in the box and it will be hidden from view but you will need to be careful of anyone who comes to investigate. Whether you hide behind the body or leave it on the ground you will need to take care of anyone who comes close.

If all else fails the box may get damaged in the rain but it is surprisingly resistant to bullets. It will not withstand a lot of fire but you can use it to protect yourself from sniper shots and you have several boxes with you.

By Your Side: Companion Worth

Not all companions are good at first. They are all good at different things.

D-Dog is never a choice. He does not cost anything to deploy once you have unlocked him if you keep his equipment light and you can use him to scout out a base. You will not need him once you know where everything is. If you are replaying a mission you can bring someone else.

And you can also change companions in the field if you need to though it costs GMP.

Quiet is one of the options overall and everyone knows it. She was meant to be good. Some story paths have emotional resonance.. She starts off as lethal only and if you do not use her properly it will take a long time for her to level up her trust and use nonlethal weapons.

So use Quiet. Accept that sometimes you have to let enemies die and give her a few kills. Before long she will be ready to use weapons with you.

D-Walker is a choice. You need a lot of GMP to use them. They are too expensive to use regularly.. If you have a mission where you make a lot of money they can be useful and if you absolutely need the firepower they can do a little bit of everything.

D-Horse is free. You can ride him a little stealthily but it is better to just go around the roads. And once you bring a vehicle to a mission it will automatically recover itself when you extract so you do not have to pay to recover it every time.. D-Horse is free and that is a good thing.

Well money is not any good if you do not spend it.

Keep Rollin' Rollin' Rollin'

When you are on the ground hold the aim button then use the sprint button to start rolling horizontally left and right along the ground.

You would be surprised at how effective it's to roll around at speed like an alligator in broad daylight. It is a little less stealthy than crawling, but not much. You can easily roll out of sight when someone sees a hint of motion but does not actually see you.

You will be doing this a lot if you want to be stealthy low to the ground and fast. Do not crawl, roll.

Prepwork: Lights Out

You may notice that most missions take place in areas that you can visit in free-roam.

You can actually use this to your advantage.

If you are having trouble with a mission visit the mission location in roam when there are fewer guards around and no consequences for being detected and prepare the stage.

Throw a grenade. Use C4 on anti-air radars so you can extract or land near the area.

Find all the lights. Shoot them out.

Blow up the power generator though it may respawn for the mission. The lights will stay out which will make sneaking in much simpler if you are willing to put in the work.

You will not be spotted immediately if you are, in the light. It makes you more visible and you can sneak through paths you could not otherwise if it is taken out.

And you could take out the lights during the mission too though enemies will see lights that break in front of them a silenced gun can shoot out lights 15m from an enemy and they will not notice if they do not see it happen.
