This game doesn't let you remap buttons in-game, but Steam Input does. This guide shows how to rebind any button on Xbox, PlayStation (DualSense) and other controllers, plus an advanced setup that lets you switch between custom layouts without breaking menu controls.

Basic

Takes about 5 minutes. Everything happens in Steam's built-in controller settings, so there's nothing to install.

The short version: Library > controller icon > Enable Steam Input > Edit Layout > click a button > pick its new job.

Step 1: Open the controller settings

Find STAR WARS: Galactic Racer™ in your Steam Library. Click the little controller icon to the right of your play time.

Step 2: Turn on Steam Input

If Steam asks, click Enable Steam Input. You only need to do this once.

Heads up: with Steam Input on, the game shows Xbox button prompts, even on a PlayStation controller. That's just how Steam Input works.
A = Cross, B = Circle, X = Square, Y = Triangle.

Step 3: Open the layout editor

Click Edit Layout.

How the editor works

This is where you can change any button to act as any other button. Buttons can also do bigger things, like switching layouts. That's covered in the Advanced section.

Heads up: your new mappings work everywhere, including menus. If you turn R1 into A, you'll also use R1 to select things in menus. The Advanced section fixes this.

Step 4: Swap a button

Here's my example. I rarely change camera angles, so I'm turning R1 into A. My thumb gets tired of pressing A/X, and my trigger finger can take that job.

Under the Bumpers section, click Right Bumper. This screen opens, and you can click any button to swap it in.

I picked A. Your Bumpers section should show the change right away.

Step 5: Turn off a button (optional)

Want a button to do nothing at all? I did this for R3.

Click the gear icon next to Right Stick Click.

Click Remove this command.

Step 6: Check your work

Back out to this screen and click View Layout.

This shows your whole controller with the new mappings. If it looks right, you're done. Steam saves your changes automatically.

What's next

Want menus to work normally again? Go to the Advanced section.
Want my setup without doing any of that? Go to the Download My Layout section.

Download My Layout

Don't want to do the Advanced setup? I published my layout, LeetLayout, to Steam's Community Layouts. Use it as-is or as a starting point for your own.

The short version: controller settings > Current Button Layout > Community Layouts > LeetLayout > Apply Layout.

Step 1: Open your current layout

Go back to the controller settings screen where you enabled Steam Input. Click Current Button Layout.

Step 2: Find LeetLayout

Click the COMMUNITY LAYOUTS tab at the top, then click LeetLayout.
Don't see it? Click SHOW ALL LAYOUTS at the bottom of the screen.

Step 3: Apply it

Click APPLY LAYOUT at the bottom. Done!

Want to tweak it? Go to the Basic section and start from Step 3. Your changes only affect your copy, not the published layout.

Advanced

This section fixes the menu problem from the Basic section.

The idea: you make two layouts (Steam calls them Action Sets) and pick one button to switch between them.

Default: normal controls for menus

Racing: your remapped controls

The short version: Edit Layout > Add Action Set > copy from None > set up a switch button > do the same in the other set.

Step 1: Add a second Action Set

Scroll to the bottom of Edit Layout and click Add Action Set.

Step 2: Name it and copy from None

Name it whatever you want. Set "Copy layout from set" to None. This set becomes your menu controls, so you don't want your remaps copied into it.

I named mine Default (menus) and Racing (remaps). That took a little renaming, but it made more sense to my brain than calling one "Menu." /shrug

Step 3: Add a switch to your menu set

Go to Buttons in your Default set.

Pick a button you only ever tap, never hold. Don't use throttle, brake, or anything else you hold down while racing. Click the gear icon next to it.

Click Add extra command. Your button keeps its normal job, and this adds a second one.

Click the ACTION SETS tab at the top, then click Change Action Set.

Make sure "Set" is your other Action Set (mine is Racing). Turn the extra options on or off however you like.

Step 4: Change the controller light (optional)

This only works on controllers with a colored light, like PlayStation controllers.

Click the gear icon next to your switch button again, then click Add extra command.

Click the GAMEPAD tab at the top, then click Pick Color.

Pick any color you like.
Heads up, this part is backwards: the color you pick is for the set you're editing now, not the set you're switching to.

Step 5: Make it a long press

Heads up: if you don't see Command # under your button, click the Expand/Collapse button.

Click the gear icon next to Change Action Set (Racing).

Click Regular Press and change it to Long Press.

Do the same for Color if you added it in Step 4. Otherwise, tapping the button will change your light.

Now tapping the button does its normal job, and holding it switches sets.

Step 6: Do the same in your other set

Go to your Racing set and repeat Steps 3 to 5. Skip Step 4 if you didn't set up the light. Use the same button, and this time switch to Default. Now holding that button flips you back and forth.
