Virginia isn't just another companion in Sons of the Forest, behind her cautious behaviour is a hidden affinity system that changes how she reacts to you, how much she trusts you, and eventually whether she'll become one of your most loyal allies.

How do you know if she actually trusts you?
How can you raise her affinity, and what should you NOT do?
What does it take to unlock both Virginia-related Steam achievements?

This guide breaks down Virginia's hidden Sentiment/Affinity system, the behaviours that reveal your friendship level, how to gain her trust without accidentally setting yourself back, and the steps needed to unlock "Every Move You Make" and "Chivalry Is Not Dead."

From the first time she cautiously watches you from the trees to the moment she's fighting at your side, there are little signs that tell you exactly where your relationship is headed, you just have to know what to look for.

Two achievements. One hidden relationship system. And a three legged mutant girl who might just become your favourite person on the island.

Who is Virginia?

Virginia is one of the most unique companions in Sons of the Forest. Unlike Kelvin, she doesn't automatically join you. Instead, she has a hidden Sentiment system that determines how comfortable she feels around you.

Virginia is the blonde, three legged, three armed mutant companion that roams the island. She will often appear near rivers, lakes, beaches, and around your base after a few in game days. When she first sees you, she is frightened and will usually run away.

By earning her trust, you'll unlock two Steam achievements:

Every Move You Make - Give Virginia a GPS Locator.
Chivalry Is Not Dead - Reach Virginia's maximum sentyment.


Virginia Hidden Affinity System & Leveling Chart

Virginia's friendship level isn't disclosed in the game, but she has a hidden internal Sentiment value from 0 to 100 that grows with positive interactions.

Stage 1 - Initial Contacts

Virginia was naturally shy and cautious.

What can you do to make her trust:

  1. Put away all weapons.
  2. Continue building or crafting.
  3. Let her approach you.
  4. Stay calm.
  5. Let her leave whenever she wants.


What you cannot do:

  1. Chase her.
  2. Aim weapons at her.
  3. Swing tools near her.
  4. Accidentally hit her.
  5. Corner her.

NOTE: One accidental hit can delay her trust a lot.


Stage 2 - Getting acquainted

As her feelings increase, you'll see a lot of milestones.

She begins to:

  1. Stay closer to camp.
  2. Watch you from nearby.
  3. Smile.
  4. Dance.
  5. Bring gifts.
  6. Point out caves.
  7. Lead you toward loot.
  8. Give you thumbs up.

NOTE: Each interaction means you're progressing.


Fastest Way to Raise Sentiment

The quickest method is surprisingly simple:

  1. Build a permanent base.
  2. Holster your weapon every time she appears.
  3. Ignore her while continuing your work.
  4. Accept every gift she brings.
  5. Follow her whenever she wants to show you something.
  6. Spend time near her.

NOTE: Never hurt or scare her.

Over several in game days, she'll naturally become your companion.


Signs She's Becoming Attached

You'll know you're making excellent progress when Virginia:

  1. Regularly hangs around your base.
  2. Stops running away.
  3. Smiles often.
  4. Brings gifts almost daily.
  5. Watches you build.
  6. Walks beside you.
  7. Sits near your campfire.
  8. Dances to the radio.

NOTE: Once these become common, you're likely well above 60 Sentiment.

60–80 follows you, accepts clothing

Achievement Guide Every Move You Make

Requirement: Give Virginia a GPS Locator.

Step 1: Wait until Virginia trusts you enough to remain close. If she still runs away, you're not ready yet.

Step 2: Get a GPS Locator. These can be found at the purple GPS markers around the island, or crafted later with:

  1. Case-GPS
  2. Wire
  3. Battery
  4. Printed Circuit Board

Step 3 Approach Virginia open her inventory and equip the GPS Locator. As soon as it's equipped, the achievement will unlock.

Achievement Guide: Chivalry Is Not Dead

This achievement unlocks automatically when Virginia reaches 100 Sentiment. There's no button to press, it's earned naturally through friendship.

What should you do to make this achievement:

  1. Stay near her.
  2. Accept gifts.
  3. Keep her safe.
  4. Equip her with better clothing.
  5. Give her weapons.
  6. Spend time together exploring.
  7. Never attack or frighten her.

Eventually, Steam will award the achievement.


Equipping Virginia

Once she fully trusts you, you can equip:

  1. GPS Locator
  2. Pistol
  3. Shotgun
  4. Clothing Outfits

Changing outfits also helps increase sentiment, especially the first time she wears a newly found outfit.


Common Mistakes

  1. Chasing Virginia.
  2. Accidentally hitting her.
  3. Swinging an axe near her.
  4. Trying to give her a GPS too early.
  5. Assuming she's bugged because she keeps leaving during the first few days.

NOTE: Virginia's AI is intentionally designed to build trust gradually.


Pro Tips

  1. Build your base near fresh water, Virginia visits these areas frequently.
  2. Place a radio in your base, seeing her dance is a great sign that she's becoming comfortable.
  3. Equip her with both the Pistol and Shotgun once available. She has unlimited ammunition, making her one of the strongest combat companions in the game.
  4. The GPS Locator makes it much easier to find her if she wanders away.

NOTE: If permanent death is enabled, protect Virginia during combat, she cannot normally be replaced if she dies.

Change her outfits! It's a simple way to boost affinity.
