The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt - How to start playing for the first time

I. Purchasing and Version Selection
On Steam it is highly recommended to purchase The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt. Complete Edition, which includes the game plus both major DLCs: Hearts of Stone and Blood and Wine. Each DLC offers over 15 hours of gameplay and their narrative quality is on par with the base game. As of May 2026 CDPR has announced that a third major expansion, The Song of the Old Times will launch on PC, PS5 and XSX in 2027. Complete Edition owners will receive it as an update.
II. Core Improvements in the Next-Gen Update
The next-gen update released in 2022 brought a wealth of improvements to PC and current-gen consoles:
Visual Upgrades: PC supports ray-traced global illumination, reflections and shadows. A new "Ultra+" graphics preset has been added, with support for DLSS 3 FSR 2.1 and XeSS upscaling technologies. You can. Match based on your GPU.

Hidden Rewards: After accepting the "Devil by the Well" contract don't jump into the well. Use Witcher Senses to scan the claw marks, fur and scorch traces near the well first. Triggering this hidden step rewards you with a relic-tier silver sword diagram. Skipping it only nets you gear.
Gwent Collection: Don't rush to challenge high-level NPCs on. Start by collecting cards from the innkeeper blacksmith and the merchant in White Orchard. Build a deck of 15+ cards before taking on opponents to avoid wasting cards in losses. The White Orchard innkeepers wife leaves later in the game so buy her cards soon as possible.
Gear Progression: Don't chase top-tier gear on. The Viper swords crafted in White Orchard plus a Griffin armor set will carry you all the way to Novigrad. Save your materials for endgame sets.
Money-Making Tip: When short on coin game use the Igni Sign to burn pigs in White Orchard. Sell the hides and raw meat to merchants in Velen for over 200 crowns per run.
V. Core Combat Techniques
Action Priority: Dodge (Alt) > Block (Right Click) > Roll (Space). Dodge costs no stamina. Can interrupt animations. Block only works against enemies. Roll consumes. Has a long recovery window.
General Combat Rhythm: Follow the "two hits, one dodge" rule. Watch for the enemys red attack indicator. Never get greedy for extra hits. Against monsters lay down an Yrden trap to slow them then follow up with Igni for area damage. Against foes rely on block-counter for higher damage output.
Sign Combos: Beginners should run Quen + Axii. Quens shield keeps you alive. Axiis charm can turn enemies into temporary allies for 12 seconds. Against groups charm the unit first and pick off the rest.
Mini-Game Tips: In fistfights use a "counterpunch" strategy. Hold block and auto-counter the moment the opponent throws a heavy punch. Land 10 counters without getting hit to unlock an achievement. In horse races let your stamina drop to 1/4 before stopping to recover and use your horses body to block opponents. Don't sprint non-stop.
VI. Skill Build Recommendations
At max level you can only earn 75 skill points. Not enough to fill every skill tree. Here are three common builds:
Swordplay + Sign Hybrid (Most Versatile): In the Sword tree, pick "Precise Blows" (+15% crit rate) and "Executioner" (+200% damage to targets). In the Sign tree max out "Quen. Exploding Shield" (shield burst knocks enemies back) "Axii. Domination" (forces enemies to fight for you for 12 seconds) and "Igni.
Full Sign Build. Focus on intensity enhancing nodes for Igni, Aard and Yrden combined with Alchemy node "Potion Duration Extended". Great for players that want to do ranged crowd control and burst damage.
Alchemy Build: Max out "Cat Potion" (night vision + 25% dodge) "Beasts Eye" (enemy outlines highlighted) and "Swift Bomb" (-30% cooldown) paired with the Steel Sword mastery node. Suited for difficulty play where potions and bombs carry the damage load.
Note: There are 3 "Waters of Awakening" (skill respec items) in the entire game. Use them wisely to reset your core build. Don't waste them on trial and error.
VII. Recommended Mods
The following mods are available directly from the Steam Workshop. Do not disable achievements:
Unlimited Weight: Completely eliminates the encumbrance problem when looting.
Generous Merchants: All merchants coin pools are raised to 50,000 crowns and refresh daily.
Free Disassembly: Dismantling gear no longer consumes resources making material recovery painless.
No Fall Damage: Combined with the next-gen patch you'll never take damage from any height.
Full Map Markers: Displays all quest objectives and hidden locations on the map.
The next-gen edition already bundles community mods like HD remasters and high-res monster models so you get a visual upgrade right out of the box without extra installation.
Final Tips
Save often. The Witcher 3 autosaves sparingly. Manual saves can save you hours of progress.
Explore everything. Question marks on the map often hide gear, places of power (free skill points!). Interesting side quests.
Read the bestiary. Knowing enemy weaknesses makes combat significantly easier.
Don't rush the story. The side content in this game is just as good, if not better, than the main quest.
