Demon Protocol is a fastpaced retro arcade space shooter that puts you in the cockpit of humanity’s last line of defense. Lock on. Light up. Lay waste. The demons are coming are you ready?
Developed by one person, Demon Protocol is a love letter to classic arcade shooters, wrapped in modern polish and pulsing with a relentless energy that keeps you coming back for one more run. It launched on July 7, 2026.
The core of the game is simple but brutally effective. You battle through 25 waves of increasingly deadly enemies, each wave throwing more at you than the last. The difficulty curve is steep but fair, and you can choose your challenge level before you even take off. Every five waves, you’ll face down one of 4 fearsome bosses massive, screenfilling threats that will test everything you’ve got. The bosses aren’t just bullet sponges; they have patterns to learn, openings to exploit, and phases that will keep you on the edge of your seat.
What makes it stand out is the powerup system. As you fight, you’ll collect upgrades that enhance your firepower and survivability, turning the tide of battle in your favor. The game also features a “bullet steering” mechanic, which lets you take enemies out without diving headfirst into the hail of bullets they keep spraying at you. It’s a small addition that makes a huge difference in how you approach each wave you’re not just dodging, you’re actively steering the chaos.
The presentation is pure retro arcade. The visuals are crisp and colorful, with a pulsing original soundtrack that drives the action forward. The developer has even added rotating planet backdrops each set of five waves has its own world, from Earth to Mars to Saturn to Toxic to Hell itself. Boss waves swap the planet for a scrolling planetary surface with jagged mountains and cratered ground, all in parallax. It’s the kind of detail that shows a real love for the genre.
It also supports local and online coop, so you can bring a friend along for the ride. There’s a 2 player coop mode, and you can even fly coop solo with an AI wingman if you want the experience of having a partner without the hassle of scheduling. The game also includes Steam leaderboards and achievements for coop modes, so you can compete with friends or the world.
It’s worth being honest about a few things. The game is very new released in July 2026 and currently has no user reviews on Steam. The developer is a solo creator who openly discloses that AI tools were used in development: the splash page images were generated by xAI Grok, the music is by Suno, and CoPilot and Claude helped with coding. This is a transparent, honest disclosure, and it doesn’t take away from the fact that the core game is a wellcrafted arcade shooter. There’s also a free demo available on Steam if you want to try before you buy.
The system requirements are mercifully low. You’ll need Windows 10, an Intel Core i3 or equivalent, 4 GB RAM, and a DirectX 11 compatible GPU. The recommended specs bump that up to an i5, 8 GB RAM, and a dedicated GPU with 1 GB VRAM. You’ll only need 200 MB of storage space this game will run on basically anything.
Who’s it for?
If you grew up on classic arcade shooters like Galaga, Gradius, or RType, this is going to hit you right in the nostalgia. If you like fastpaced action games that reward reflexes, pattern recognition, and a little bit of nerve, you’ll get lost in this for hours. It’s also for players who want a cheap, selfcontained arcade experience they can pick up for ten minutes or sink an entire evening into. And if you’ve got a friend who enjoys coop shooters, the twoplayer mode is a great way to spend an afternoon.
Rthere’s a free demo available on Steam right now. You’re getting a complete arcade shooter with 25 waves, 4 bosses, coop, leaderboards, and a soundtrack that will stick in your head.
If the game has sparked your interest, best of luck winning!
