📝 Description

Morhval: Ravenglaire is an oldschool firstperson sandbox RPG that wears its inspirations on its sleeve. It’s a game built in the spirit of Daggerfall, Morrowind, and the systemic openworld RPGs of the late 1990s a deliberately lowpoly, coarsetextured world where freedom, consequence, and interconnected systems matter far more than cinematic polish. You begin at eighteen years old in the village of Hearthmere, with little more than the clothes on your back and a family pantry that’s running dangerously low. From there, the game hands you the reins and simply asks: what kind of life will you build?

A Living, Procedural Province

Ravenglaire covers approximately 250 km² and is regenerated for each new campaign while preserving its major authored story locations. Roads, settlements, taverns, lakes, faction outposts, abolitionist camps, events, and dungeons are all distributed from a campaign seed, meaning every journey has a different geography. The province contains more than eighty dungeons and over one hundred points of interest, spread across distinct regions: the cold forests and high plateau of Hollow Pines, the wet and corrupted woods of Blackroot, the open Volker plains and dry savannas, the Thorn steppe and semidesert frontiers, the Redglass deep desert, the grey eastern highlands and cold mountain forests, the Pale Verge at the edge of the snow, the green banks and oases of the Nareth River, and a western coast with beaches and ocean fishing.

Procedural settlements aren’t just repeated clusters of houses. They can develop around agriculture, herding, hunting, logging, quarrying, trade, military activity, or apothecary work. Their economy affects their buildings, merchants, available work, local demand, and the character of the people who live there. Settlements may also follow different social policies and respond differently to your actions, which means the world doesn’t just look different each time it behaves differently too.

Build a Character, Build a Life

You choose from five starting classes Warrior, Rogue, Ranger, Alchemist, or Occultist or create a custom class by selecting your own strengths and weaknesses. Your character is defined by six attributes: Strength, Agility, Intelligence, Endurance, Charisma, and Speed. Twentyfour skills cover weapons, armor, stealth, persuasion, lockpicking, six schools of magic, and practical professions like alchemy, farming, cooking, fishing, mining, and smithing. Skills improve through use. Fighting with a bow makes you better with bows. Brewing potions develops Alchemy. Working crops develops Farming. Dialogue, crafting, exploration, and combat all feed the same character progression rather than existing as isolated minigames. Skill checks use a visible d20based system influenced by your skill, attributes, and circumstances, and mastering a discipline to 100 unlocks Prestige training, which lets you specialize individual spells, weapons, potions, meals, and crops through up to three Prestige levels.

Combat, Magic, and Survival

Combat is realtime and firstperson, with distinct weapon types that differ in reach, recovery time, stamina cost, impact, draw speed, and critical chance. You can fight with short weapons, long weapons, blunt weapons, bows, crossbows, or your fists. Magic is a full system with multiple schools, and temporary magical effects now correctly follow the passage of world time if you enchant your weapon and then travel for several hours, the enchantment will have expired when you arrive. Survival mechanics include hunger, camping, resting, gathering resources, and participating in crafting and economic activities. You can explore on foot or on horseback, trade, negotiate contracts, perform faction and settlement jobs, enter caves and procedural dungeons, loot enemies, and manage your hunger.

A World That Remembers

One of the most striking things about Ravenglaire is how much the world remembers. NPC deaths, discovered locations, looted containers, defeated dungeon enemies, faction standing, contracts, relationships, and quest outcomes all persist in the save. The world remembers crimes and hostility: theft, assault, and other offenses can create bounties, cause guards to confront you, and make local residents avoid you for a time. Settlements without guards don’t remain permanently locked against you, but communities still react immediately when you violate their rules. You can build trust and affection with eligible characters through personal conversations and choices. Relationships can become temporary, committed, or domestic, and a partner may be invited to live at an owned residence.

Factions, Organizations, and Uncomfortable Choices

Three major organizations provide longterm progression. The Athenaeum focuses on magical research, dangerous artifacts, anomalies, spell services, and restricted knowledge. Ironwatch deals in mercenary work, monster hunts, settlement defense, military equipment, and martial training. The Blackroad Compact handles theft, extortion, blackmail, lockboxes, and criminal influence. Admission depends on relevant skills, and completing organization jobs raises your standing through several ranks, unlocking better contracts, merchants, discounts, services, equipment, and specialized rewards. Betrayal, theft from members, or repeated violence can lead to discipline or expulsion.

Ravenglaire also contains deliberately harsh social systems. Some settlements permit slavery, while others oppose it. Slaver compounds, abolitionist camps, traders, guards, raids, ambushes, and reputation systems exist physically in the world. The player may buy, sell, or free an enslaved follower, transfer equipment to them, travel and rest with them, or help liberated people reach abolitionist protection. The player may instead work against slavers, raid compounds, release prisoners, and build abolitionist reputation or become notorious enough to attract retaliation. Hostile groups can also capture the player, and captivity includes confiscated belongings, escape attempts, recovery of equipment, and the possibility of waiting for another opportunity rather than treating defeat as an immediate game over. These systems are intended to create uncomfortable choices and lasting consequences, not a morally neutral commodity loop.

Authored Stories Inside a Systemic World

Alongside procedural exploration and work, Ravenglaire contains authored quest lines with branching outcomes. The opening regions include stories about hunger, family, religion, forbidden letters, illness, political conflict, refugees, plague, and the survival of entire communities. Choices are often physical and systemic rather than simple dialogue selections. You may need to search a real room, steal evidence, enter a cellar, track someone through the forest, gather medicine, escort a person beyond a gate, decide what truth to report, or return days later to witness the consequence. Beyond the authored storylines, work can be generated through settlement service contracts, dungeon clearing and retrieval jobs, rescue and missingperson assignments, predator hunts and bandit camps, deliveries and recovered supplies, personal favors, organization contracts, supply agreements, freight routes, abolitionist and slaver conflicts, and arena campaigns.

Early Access and Development

The game is currently in Early Access, and the developer expects it to remain there for approximately 18 to 24 months. The current version already offers a playable openworld sandbox covering nearly 250 km², with character creation, class selection, skill improvement through use, exploration on foot or horseback, realtime combat with weapons and magic, trading, contracts, faction and settlement jobs, caves, procedural dungeons, looting, camping, resting, hunger management, resource gathering, crafting, and economic activities. The world contains settlements, taverns, traders, faction locations, wilderness encounters, creatures, hostile groups, and procedural points of interest. The complete main storyline is not yet available, and some AI, animations, interface elements, balance, and procedural content remain unfinished or rough and will continue to be improved during Early Access.

The full version is planned to expand and deepen the existing sandbox. The current world covers nearly 250 km², and the present development target for version 1.0 is approximately 500 km². Planned additions include the main storyline, larger handcrafted settlements and locations, more factions, quests, contracts, enemies, creatures, dungeons, equipment, spells, events, and opportunities for character development. Development will also focus on artificial intelligence, balancing, performance, interface usability, procedural variety, animations, and overall technical stability. Save compatibility is a priority, but major Early Access updates may occasionally require players to begin a new campaign. One of the next major systems planned is building your own settlement and recruiting NPCs to live there.

Reception and Community

The game is very niche and has not found a wide audience yet. On Steam, it currently has only a handful of user reviews, with community aggregators listing it at 50% positive based on a tiny sample far too small to draw any broad conclusions from. One review site shows a community rating of 100/100 based on that same limited data, while another lists it at 67% positive across three reviews. The developer is actively engaged with the small community, releasing regular updates that improve performance, settlement behavior, NPC reliability, magic systems, distant terrain, and technical stability. Recent patches have significantly improved loading times and world streaming, and the developer has been transparent about the ongoing challenges of optimizing a large, heavily procedural world.

System Requirements

Minimum: Windows 10 (64bit), an Intel Core i54460 or AMD Ryzen 3 1200, 8 GB RAM, and an NVIDIA GeForce GTX 750 Ti 2 GB or AMD Radeon R7 360 2 GB with OpenGL 4.6 support. You’ll need 5 GB of storage space, and an SSD is recommended. Lowerend systems may require reduced resolution and lower graphics settings. Recommended: Windows 10 (64bit), an Intel Core i58400 or AMD Ryzen 5 2600, 16 GB RAM, and an NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1060 6 GB or AMD Radeon RX 580 8 GB with OpenGL 4.6 support. An SSD is strongly recommended for faster world generation, save loading, and transitions between areas.

Who Is This Game For?

If you grew up on Daggerfall, Morrowind, or Gothic and you’ve been waiting for a modern RPG that captures that same sense of systemic freedom, unforgiving consequence, and lowpoly charm, this is exactly your kind of game. If you enjoy sandbox RPGs where you can ignore the main quest entirely and just live a life become a thief, a mercenary, a farmer, a mage, a slaver, or an abolitionist and where the world remembers every choice you make, the depth of the simulation here is genuinely impressive for a solodeveloped project. It’s also for players who appreciate a game that trusts you to figure things out, with no quest markers, no handholding, and no safety net. And if you’re the kind of person who likes discovering hidden gems during their Early Access journey and watching a game grow alongside its community, this one has your name on it.

If you prefer polished, finished experiences with a complete main storyline and a large, active community, you should probably wait and see how the game develops over the next year or two. But if the idea of a vast, unpredictable province where every path is yours sounds like a world you want to get lost in, this one is worth a look.

If the game happens to catch your interest, good luck winning!
