๐Ÿ“ Description

Sakura: The Eternal Night is a short, atmospheric visual novel about loss, encounter, and farewell, set in a world where virtual reality and reality have started to blur together. After the Third World War, a project called "Tokoyo no Sakura" was launched to rebuild the ancient capital of Kyoto not on Earth, but on the far side of the moon, in an eternal night where the cherry blossoms never fall and the sun never rises. You play as Haruka Watanabe, a young man haunted by his past who signs on as a tester for the virtual recreation. During an accident, he becomes trapped inside a "Closed Domain" within the game, and meets a mysterious shrine maiden named Inori Sakuraba. She is gentle, enigmatic, and seems to know everything about the world except her own past. Her arrival changes the course of his life forever.

The Core Experience

This is a visual novel, so the emphasis is on reading, atmosphere, and choice rather than action or complex mechanics. The eternal-night Kyoto is the heart of the experience: a beautifully crafted ancient city that never sees daylight, with a quiet, melancholic visual atmosphere that makes the virtual world feel both inviting and deeply lonely. The story weaves together virtual reality, sci-fi, fantasy, and Japanese mythology, with mysteries involving the "Closed Domain," "Spacequakes," and the legendary Yamata-no-Orochi unfolding as you dig deeper into what the simulation is really hiding. Along the way you meet a small cast of vivid characters the gentle but clumsy Inori, the sharp-tongued but loyal Nagi Isozaki, the quiet and ever-supportive Shizuru Takanashi each with their own story arc and their own place in the mystery.

Choices and Endings

The game features multiple endings, and the choices you make shape the fate of everyone around you. One thing worth knowing before you dive in: the earlier choices don't actually affect the plot only the final choice impacts the story. After clearing Ending 1 and Ending 2, the true ending unlocks on the main menu. So while the branching structure is simpler than it first appears, the payoff is a complete story with a definitive conclusion waiting for players who see it through.

Reception and Community

The game has been met with a "Very Positive" reception on Steam, holding an 82% positive rating based on 11 user reviews. A Steam curator described it as a solid small-scale indie visual novel that blends virtual reality, sci-fi, fantasy, and Japanese mythology, praising the character writing and the emotional core of the story while noting that the AI-assisted art and music can feel visually inconsistent in places. It's a niche title with a small but appreciative audience, and for the price of a coffee, it's an easy recommendation for fans of short, emotional visual novels.

AI Content Disclosure

The developer is transparent about this on the store page: the game was made entirely by a solo developer, and the music and visuals are AI-assisted. All AI-generated materials have been adjusted, edited, and post-processed by the developer before being included in the game. The English version is also AI-translated, which is worth knowing if you're sensitive to translation quality. If AI-assisted art and localization are a dealbreaker for you, this is worth taking into account.

System Requirements

Minimum: Windows 7 or higher / macOS 10.13 or higher / Ubuntu 18.04 or higher, a 1.5 GHz processor, 1024 MB RAM, and an OpenGL 2.0 or DirectX 9.0c compatible GPU. You'll need 2 GB of storage space and a broadband internet connection. It's an extremely lightweight game that will run on virtually any computer made in the last decade.

Who Is This Game For?

If you enjoy short, atmospheric visual novels that prioritize mood and emotional storytelling over complex mechanics, this is exactly your kind of game. If the idea of exploring a virtual, eternal-night Kyoto a city that never sees the sun, rebuilt on the far side of the moon sounds like a world you want to get lost in, the setting alone is worth the experience. It's also for players who appreciate a complete story with multiple endings and don't mind a simpler branching structure. And if you just want a cheap, melancholic, beautifully strange little game about memory, loss, and the people we meet in the dark, this one has your name on it.

If the game has you entertained, good luck taking the win!
