Out Of Memories

📝 Description

Out Of Memories is a minimalist, surreal horror-puzzle adventure that traps you inside a decaying, first-generation PC. You wake up in a strange place with your memories completely wiped, and the only thing you know for certain is that a toxin is slowly destroying your body. But that's just one of the many things trying to kill you. The environment itself is a lethal labyrinth of impossible geometry, created by the processing power of a machine that is actively failing around you. The floppy drives are beginning to malfunction. The world gets weirder. And there are observerspeople who seem genuinely amused by the fact that you are dying by the minute. Get ready to die like it's 1981.

A Nightmare Rendered in 256 Characters

The entire game is built using only the 256 text characters available on the original IBM PC from 1981. There are no sprites, no polygons, no modern visual effects. Just phosphor-green text on a black screen, occasionally punctuated by a stark, not-quite-authentic blood red. It is a deliberate, committed aesthetic choice that turns every corridor, every trap, and every creature into a collection of characters you have to interpret. The audio is a mixture of vintage beeps and boops layered with realistic, unsettling sound effects, creating an atmosphere that is both nostalgic and deeply wrong. It belongs to a genre sometimes called "glitchcore" or "cursed OS," and it wears that identity with pride.

Your Life Is a Resourceand It Is Running Out

The core of the game is a literal countdown. Your remaining lifespan is displayed on screen, and it is constantly ticking down. Every trap you fall victim toelectrocution, beheading, getting crushed between walls, being eaten by a shark or a gruesome smiling monsterdoesn't just kill you; it takes an additional five units of your remaining time. If that number reaches zero, it's an instant, permanent death. This creates a uniquely tense challenge: you aren't just trying to survive each room, you are trying to survive efficiently. You have to move through the deadly corridors with enough time left to tackle what comes next, and every mistake compounds. The game is designed to be shortabout an hour on a first playthroughbut that hour is dense with tension, and finishing it requires patience, pattern recognition, and a willingness to replay sections until you can optimize your route.

Dark Comedy and Caustic Observers

The horror is punctuated by a vein of dark comedy. The observers who watch your desperate attempts to stay alive offer caustic commentary, and the game's writing leans into the absurdity of your situation. There is a narrative here, told through text panels and the strange, impossible world you navigate, and while it isn't the most original story you'll ever experience, it has moments of genuine intrigueparticularly in how it uses your remaining time as a narrative device toward the end. The game is divided into six chapters of escalating weirdness, each one introducing new traps, new threats, and new ways for the decaying hardware around you to make your life shorter.

Reception and Community

The game has been met with a positive reception from the small number of players who have found it. On Steam, it holds a "Positive" overall rating based on a handful of user reviews. One reviewer called it "a cool game with great art style and atmosphere," noting that it is not easy and that some parts can feel unfair or annoying, especially given the constant time limitbut they still recommended it, saying they had fun in the end. Another described it as "a stylish 2D dexterity-based game" that was originally made for a game jam but has a professional quality and enough content to occupy 5 to 10 hours if you commit to mastering it, praising the ASCII presentation for giving it a very strong atmosphere. A curator review compared it to "Alien Isolation majorly dressed down in pixels but upped in difficulty." The most common criticism is that the difficulty is punishing and that the repetition of restarting levels can feel repetitive, but the consensus is that the challenge is well-managed and the experience is worth the effort. The community is very small, and anyone who picks it up now would be discovering it before almost everyone else.

System Requirements

Minimum: Windows 10, an Intel Core 2 Duo, 4 GB RAM, a 256 MB graphics card, and 50 MB of storage space. It is an incredibly lightweight game that will run on virtually any computer made in the last two decades. The game is available in English and Brazilian Portuguese.

Who Is This Game For?

If you love minimalist horror experiences that prioritize atmosphere, tension, and clever use of limitations over flashy graphics and jump scares, this is exactly your kind of nightmare. If you enjoy the challenge of a game that gives you a literal timer and dares you to be efficient, where every death costs you more than just a restart, the time-as-a-resource mechanic will keep you on edge from the first minute to the last. It's also for players who appreciate the "cursed OS" and glitchcore aesthetic, and who get a thrill from seeing a single, committed visual style executed with this much care. And if you just want a short, intense, and genuinely strange horror-puzzle game that you can finish in an hour but will want to replay to master, this one has your name on it.
If the game has left you interested, good luck coming out ahead!
