Roku and Rei

Roku and Rei is one of those clever little puzzle games that takes a simple idea and runs wild with it. You control two characters at the same time, Roku and Rei and the twist is that they move in completely opposite directions. When you push right, one goes right and the other goes left. When you push up, one goes up and the other goes down. Your job is to guide both of them to their respective crosses simultaneously, using their color coded abilities to navigate a world full of buttons, brushes, portals, and other interactive objects.

The color mechanic is the heart of it. Roku can only interact with red objects, and Rei can only interact with blue ones. Roku can't pick up a blue key, and Rei can't push a red button. This forces you to think two steps ahead at all times, you're not just solving one puzzle, you're solving two intertwined puzzles at once. It sounds simple, and it starts that way, but by the time you hit the later worlds, you'll be staring at the screen for a solid five minutes before you even know where to begin.

What makes this game stand out is how much content there is. There are over 100 levels spread across 7 unique worlds, each introducing new mechanics and objects that build on what you've already learned. The difficulty curve is smooth but unrelenting, the early levels teach you the basics, and the later ones expect you to have a deep understanding of every mechanic. A single playthrough takes about 5-10 hours, depending on how long you sit and stare at particularly nasty puzzles.

The game was made for the GMTK Game Jam 2023, where it made it to the top 100 and got good feedback from players. it’s created by a small indie team and you can feel the individual touch in every level There's a built in level editor that lets you create your own puzzles and share them instantly on the Steam Workshop. You can also download and play levels made by other players without ever leaving the game. There are over 30 achievements to unlock, and the game runs so well you can keep it in the background without your computer breaking a sweat.
