The Dawn Of A Flower

๐Ÿ ENDED

๐Ÿ“ Description

The Dawn Of A Flower is a historical fantasy otome visual novel set in an alternate version of ancient Egypt. You play as an Egyptian princess who, after her mother the queen is murdered and her father the pharaoh turns his back on her, is forced to disguise herself as a man,a prince just to survive. That's the core hook, and it shapes everything about the story that follows.

The setup is classic otome: you're a young woman navigating a dangerous court full of secrets, and there are three main love interests to get to know. There's Denech, a blunt, abrasive prince who starts off on the wrong foot with you. There's Enrim, a smooth talking information broker from Thebes who knows everyone and everything. And there's Tamuz, a kind hearted general who genuinely worries about you. Each of them has their own route, and depending on your choices, the story can end in tragedy, in romance, or with your character rising to become pharaoh herself. There are multiple endings, so your decisions actually matter.

The game mixes Egyptian history with fantasy elements. Your character awakens mysterious abilities during a moment of crisis, and the mystery of who murdered your mother, and why someone is now threatening your life, drives the plot forward. You'll have to figure out who to trust and who to be wary of, and the game gives you plenty of opportunities to screw up and die if you're not paying attention.

What makes it stand out visually is the watercolor style artwork. The backgrounds have a soft, hand painted texture that gives the whole game a dreamy, storybook feel, and the character portraits are detailed and expressive. The soundtrack is centered on calm, mysterious piano pieces, with two vocal songs thrown in for key moments. There are also mini games scattered throughout, card matching, brick breaking, rhythm games, to break up the reading and give you something to do with your hands.

It was developed by a small indie team, and released on Steam in March 2024. It's a short game, reviewers noted you can 100% it in about 20 minutes if you skip through the text, though a full playthrough where you actually read everything will take longer.
One important thing to know, the English translation is rough. Several Steam reviews point out that the localization has significant errors, confusing pronoun usage, and passages that are genuinely hard to parse. The original Korean version is the most readable, and the game's endings only unlock properly when playing in Korean. There's no official Chinese localization either, which has frustrated a lot of players. If you can read Korean, you'll get the most out of this. If you're relying on English, you'll still get the story, but you'll have to work for it.

Who's it for?

If you like otome games with historical settings and a bit of fantasy mixed in, this is worth a look, the Egyptian backdrop is genuinely rare in the genre. If you're a fan of visual novels where your choices lead to multiple endings and you enjoy replaying to see different routes, you'll get some mileage out of this. It's also for players who care about art direction and atmosphere over polished mechanics. And if you're curious about Korean otome games but don't mind dealing with a flawed translation, this one has a lot of heart underneath the rough edges.

If the game has piqued your interest and drawn you in, best of luck in your pursuit of victory!
