At its heart, Alan Wake is a strategic action game. The whole combat system revolves around using your flashlight beam to manage distance between you and the enemies while you pick them off one by one. Light keeps them at bay while burning away their darkness armor, and in the most intense fights, you have to juggle a delicate balance. It forces you to think, to prioritize, to stay calm under pressure. It slows the pace down, sure, but it also cranks up the tension in a way that feels incredibly clever and satisfying.

And the story? It's great. Alan Wake isn't trying to be high literature, it's leaning into the quirks and occasional cheesiness of psychological horror stories, and it does that brilliantly. It knows exactly what it is and leans into it with confidence. You have to be willing to embrace its peculiar vibe, but if you do, it rewards you in spades.

Visually and aurally, it's an absolute feast. Even if the gameplay weren't top notch, I'd still come back to Alan Wake just to exist in its world. Remedy knows how to craft moments that stick with you. Listening to Pat Maine on the radio, fighting off Taken on a festival stage while The Old Gods of Asgard blast through the speakers, picking up your first set of flares, these aren't just gameplay moments, they're memories.
