I recommend trying it out if you have a group of friends or you like playing shooters alone.
This game can be both incredibly engaging and incredibly infuriating. I've been playing on the highest difficulty with no HUD, and that choice has forced me to play tactically in ways I wouldn't have otherwise. It pushed me to actually engage with systems I'd normally ignore, and that's made the experience feel much more rewarding.

The semi realistic ballistics, wind doesn't seem to be a factor, but bullet drop and travel time absolutely are. Add a subtle layer of difficulty that requires you to really understand your weapon. I actually took the time to document the individual characteristics of my favoured rifles, something I can't say I've ever done for any other game. My playstyle has centred around sniper rifles, and landing shots at big distance has been incredibly satisfying.

Playing with friends takes the game to another level. Acting as a spotter for a buddy while he infiltrates a base was genuinely some of the best gaming I've experienced this year. The version of Bolivia is beautiful and expansive, with a wide variety of environments: salt flats, mountain jungles, dense forests, and the dynamic weather often creates these breathtaking, almost cinematic views. There were moments where the scenery lined up perfectly with the soundtrack, and it all felt surprisingly sublime.

But it's not without its flaws.

The story is completely forgettable. It's little more than an excuse to get you from one mission to the next. The side missions suffer from a lack of variety too. You'll be stealing the same planes and stopping the same convoys over and over again.

The AI is another sore spot. My three teammates are next to useless outside of their sync shot ability. They constantly get me killed because they'd rather revive me in the middle of a firefight than actually shoot the enemy standing right next to them. It's infuriating. And the rebel NPCs meant to act as reinforcements? More often than not, they've blown my cover and alerted the entire base while I'm trying to stay stealthy. And they repeat the same boring dialogue and unfunny jokes constantly.

The environments can also be finicky. Surfaces that look climbable often aren't, and I found myself getting stuck in mountain cliffs multiple times, forcing me to abandon whatever I was doing and fast travel away.

Overall, I've really enjoyed my time with Wildlands. It's flawed, sometimes frustrating, and the story is completely forgettable, but when the gameplay clicks, especially with a friend, it's genuinely special. I'd recommend picking it up if you have someone to play with, or if you catch it on sale.

❌ Contra:
  • Unmemorable
  • Repetitive and predictable missions
  • Unresponsive AI teammates.
  • The lack of tactical elements
