A terrible childhood memory
I first played Max Payne when I was a kid and never finished it. Because those nightmare sequences scared the absolute life out of me. I genuinely couldn't bring myself to continue. Fast forward to today, and they're still creepy. Thankfully, this time I managed to push through and finally finish the game.
I picked up the entire Max Payne trilogy for a steal, and now I'm playing all three back to back to finally understand the story. Back when I was a little kid, I didn't even speak English. I had absolutely no idea why Max was shooting hundreds of people. I just knew it was awesome.
And you know what? The story still holds up surprisingly well. The comic book presentation gives it a style that even many modern games don't have. It's gritty, it's moody, and it's dripping with that noir atmosphere that's become so iconic over the years.
The only downside is that the game definitely shows its age on modern PCs. But thankfully, the community once again proves it's carrying the gaming industry on its back. Before start a game I recommend you to install "Max Payne 1, Complete FixPack - 2025 Edition by darkje" and you're pretty much good to go.
It's amazing how a game from 2001 can still be this much fun. Sure, it has some rough edges, but the atmosphere, storytelling, and iconic bullet time make it easy to see why Max Payne became such a classic. It's not just a shooter, it's a piece of gaming history.
Now if you'll excuse me, I have two more Max Payne games to play, and hopefully no more childhood trauma waiting around the corner.
