10+ hours long xianxia visual novel
Journey of Destiny is Cai Jiahe's VN format adaptation of the novel universe authored by 魔神吞天 (which was also partially adapted to manhua in the past). As the first part, or prologue, you don't get a complete start to end story here, but it does offer 10+ hours of content.

While the original novels are set in the modern day, this visual novel adaptation is set in a fantasy cultivation world. The four routes change from whose perspective you experience the story, and follow each character from their early childhood to a specific event that segues into the next part of the story. With each further route, you learn more about the events, motivations and if you so want karmic ties between everyone. The routes should be played in order, as otherwise you will both have things spoiled for you as well as simultaneously miss out on necessary information to understand the plot.
The very first hours have some excellent light-hearted comedic writing, but overall the setting is a brutal xanxia world with child slavery, blood sport, and extreme violence. Journey of Destiny is sure not potentially traumatizing in the way various Japanese VNs are, but it's also not an entirely harmless read.

As far as choices go, there are a bunch, but most are rather inconsequential (and IMO shouldn't really exist). It's a mostly kinetic read, and I appreciate not having to combine all possible choice combinations in order to not miss out on anything.

For now a majority of the game is AI-translated to English, but the author strikes me as fluent enough in English (see their hand-written drafts in this post) that the quality of the translation should be quite good after another proofreading pass. While reading the VN I took a boatload of notes about the translation, so hopefully in the near future this will already be improved.

What I personally appreciate is that the translation stays close to Chinese expressions without sacrificing readability for it, so you neither feel you're missing out on meanings nor that you have to guess what is meant. All in all, the story makes sense in its present form, with the exception of a short transition to the setting of the original novels (which comes with a warning by the author, apologizing in advance that you might feel lost there).

The art is entirely AI, as one might expect from a young solo developer with no budget, but it does the job and offers enough variety. The non-uniform art styles of the various characters were not much of a problem for me, and I assume it is necessary to have a certain comic book style for specific ones so they more closely resemble the comic book adaptations readers might already be familiar with.

Having been made aware of the demand for them, the developer swiftly added Steam Achievements in early July 2026, and they work well.

I liked my time with Journey of Destiny and would happily go through further chapters.
✅ Avantages:
  • 10+ hours of VN content
  • mostly kinetic
  • some sequences excellently written
  • some of the AI art is quite amusing
  • faithful xianxia vibe
❌ Inconvénients:
  • mostly AI-translated
  • inconsequential choices
  • only initially fluffy
  • prologue (not complete story universe)
