I really wanted to love this game. Ever since I first saw the concept pop up on social media, I was intrigued. I did have fun with it at the beginning. The core gameplay loop is solid and there’s something strangely satisfying about stocking shelves, managing inventory, and keeping the shop running. But the more I played, the more I realized there's just not much else to it.
The mechanics never really go anywhere. You throw down a few boosters, make sure there's enough space to walk around, and that's about it. Decoration doesn't matter, and there's hardly any room to decorate anyway. I spent credits filling my trailer with random junk from Solruna, only to realize that not only do I never get more space, but the decor itself doesn't even serve a purpose. And if you're into making things look nice, there just aren't enough options to create anything genuinely pleasing anyway. All you do is stock up on goods, maybe buy an extra shelf if you feel like it, and let your employee handle restocking while you man the register. It was novel at first, but the repetition sets in fast.
And the story? It's very mediocre. I can see the message the writer was going for conservation, environmentalism, balancing progress with responsibility, and I'm all for that. But the execution is so ham-fisted that it's hard to take seriously. Almost none of the characters are likeable. The only ones I ended up genuinely liking were Grace, Ted, and maybe Derek. I didn't even like the character you play as. You're given zero agency and constantly painted as the bad guy who has to do all the grunt work. The townspeople are mad at your aunt for expanding the store? Well, for some reason, now it's your job to fix all the environmental issues that plagued this town long before you ever showed up. And you can't say no, you're a doormat with no spine, forced to comply while the actual protestors are just there.
By chapter three, I had absolutely zero motivation to finish the game. The combination of shallow mechanics and a frustrating story just killed any desire I had to keep going.
I can't recommend this game, especially at full price.
