One of the best RPGs, ahead of its time.
The Gothic series and Gothic 2 with its add on in particular, has earned a cult following in both Germany and Eastern Europe, and for good reason. Developed by a tiny indie studio, it delivered absolutely fantastic storytelling in a fantasy world without any of the usual high fantasy nonsense. The entire series is low fantasy, similar to the Witcher series, but not quite as grim. What makes Gothic 2 truly shine isn't grit, it's roughness. This is a unique RPG in that there's a real difference between knocking someone out and actually killing them. That means bashing a few heads is a viable strategy for many quests without having to become a mass murderer. It allows for intricate quest design and plenty of memorable moments. And honestly, it spoils the inner child in me every time I get to announce that my character is about to plant his fist in someone's face, usually for good reason.

The world lives on the shoulders of its NPCs. Some of them don't care at all if you knock them out, rob them, and loot their entire house,. They'll just call you a bastard and move on. Others will outright refuse to talk to you because someone saw you steal a single item days ago, and word spread. You'll have to go to the militia commander, pay a fine, and wait until they're willing to speak with you again. Technically speaking, these mechanics are actually quite simple, but for a game approaching twenty years old, they were not only innovative but absolutely charming. To this day, the Gothic series features, in some regards, better quest design than behemoths like The Elder Scrolls.

This works because the characters are completely believable. Every NPC has a day night cycle. As the story progresses, NPCs migrate to different areas. And the best part? With each new chapter, new quests appear in areas you've already visited, leading you back to places you might have overlooked. This little trick alone makes the game world feel far more alive than most modern RPGs, where you're forced to walk from quest hub to quest hub, farming fetch quests like a swarm of locusts. Gothic 2 doesn't have hubs. It doesn't have quest markers. It doesn't have any of those "comfort functions" that are industry standard today. And because of that, the technically medium sized map feels like a massive world you can lose countless hours in. Need a minimap? Go buy a map from a trader, but don't expect it to be complete or perfect. It's literally a hand drawn map, probably made by someone without an art degree. That's the gritty level of realism Gothic 2 offers. No idea where you are? Look for signposts. Try not to die on your journey back to where you came from before you got lost in the forest. It sounds tedious, but it plays absolutely amazingly. It feels like an actual adventure.

There's also massive replay value. You have three main factions to choose from within the first chapter, each with completely unique quest chains inaccessible to the others. Different combat trainers, different equipment, different quest designs, each faction plays significantly differently, meaning you can play Gothic 2 three times in a row without it feeling too repetitive.j

When Night of the Raven released, it was a revelation in itself. To my knowledge, it's one of the very few, if not the only examples of an add on that wasn't just tacked on as a separate area, but developed as an "add in." It added a completely new storyline that tied into all the other chapters of the base game, added countless new quests, and introduced new NPCs to existing areas. Even veterans who had already spent hundreds of hours in Gothic 2 found themselves exploring a partially brand new game.

To this day, Gothic 2 remains one of my most cherished games and I ended up losing myself in it again for hundreds of hours.

Expect a difficulty as high as Dark Souls, though the difficulty curve of the first two Gothic games is legendary.

Recommended to anyone who loves RPGs and doesn't shy away from old school game design. Recommended to everyone else as well, for reasons I can't quite put into words.

I really can't stress enough how much I love this game.
