Promising game concept
Thief Simulator starts out strong. It's got some solid sneaking mechanics, and the concept is definitely not one you see every day. The focus is on stealth, sneaking into houses, grabbing valuables without being detected, and getting out before the tenants realise you were ever there. No combat, no assassinations, hurting people is actually a fail state, so it's an interesting twist on the genre. As you unlock new tools and abilities, you can try different entrances and approaches, which is all genuinely fun at first.
The problem is, it kind of starts out strong and then doesn't really go anywhere. Once you've finished the tutorial heists, you've pretty much seen everything the game has to offer. Find a way into the house, ideally while the tenants are out, cram as much valuable stuff per pound into your bag as possible, maybe steal a few paintings or a flatscreen TV, and get out. Rinse and repeat. Over and over. Once you've broken into one house, you've essentially broken into them all.
Don't get me wrong, the tenants have different routines, some stay home all day, and the layouts vary, but the core gameplay loop is always the same. The items you're stealing are generally identical. And you're only selling stuff to buy expensive new equipment that lets you open a door that arbitrarily requires a better lockpick? It feels like progression for the sake of progression, not real variety.
There's just not a lot of depth once you get past the initial tutorial, which is a real shame. It's not a bad game by any means, I'd give it a "middling" rating if I could, but it's thoroughly meh. Get it on sale, play it for an hour or two, put it down, and let your memories of it fade until you feel like another quick session.
