I find myself in a strange place with this game. On one hand, I genuinely enjoy it because farming is my life, after all. But on the other hand, it's seriously missing about 90% of what should actually be in a proper farming simulation. And that's a problem.
Let's start with the basics: crop management. Where's the nuance? Where's the real NPK and soil composition system that forces you to think about fertilization for each individual crop? Nowhere. There are no pests to deal with, no real consequences for ethical or unethical practices. Soil hydration? Completely ignored. You just plant and wait. And animal husbandry? It's so bland it hurts. In reality, farms use animals to fill specific niches, but this game doesn't implement that at all. They don't even need food or water. You can buy them and forget about them forever. They won't die.
Now let's talk about building an empire. Well, it falls short there too. There's no real empire to build. It's just you on the map with a few random helpers that pop in when you need them, and of course, grandpa. Where are the permanent workers? Where's the hiring system? We should be able to build on site worker barracks, have full time helpers who actually stick around, and manage their conditions to govern productivity. There are millions of templates out there for systems like this. It's not like the devs had to reinvent the wheel.
And then there's the economy. Static. Completely static. No fluctuation, no supply and demand, no real market to interact with. Production has very little mechanics behind it. Just a long list of recipes with no depth. This game should be about productivity, but the devs put training wheels on in certain places, which completely undermines the "sim" part of the experience.
You can store crops indefinitely with no degradation or spoilage. Greenhouses, animal pens, factories - all plug and play. There's no challenge in setting them up or maintaining them. And don't even get me started on the little things. You can't even pick up a carton of eggs without buying a forklift or outfitting your front end loader. Everything uses the same interface, which just takes you to a menu with very few options. It feels shallow.
At the end of the day, this game really just showcases heavy industrial farm equipment and its use, not farming in general. Everything is geared toward getting more equipment, not toward actually being a good farmer. It's more about the machinery than the craft.
So where does that leave me? I like the game because, well, it's a game. It's fun in its own way. But if the developers want this to be referred to as a "Farm Sim," it's missing a lot. This is a tractor showcase with farming-themed activities, not a true simulation of what it means to run a farm.
