I haven't touched a FIFA game since the mid 2000's, but when I saw FC 25 on sale recently, I thought, why not? I decided to pick it up specifically for Player Career mode, because surely, with Ultimate Team making them billions of dollars, they'd have the resources to polish the rest of the game, right? Wrong. Dead wrong. It's painfully obvious that EA only cares about UT, and since I have zero interest in that mode, I'm left with a half baked product that feels like an afterthought.
The bugs I encountered within just a few hours of playing are genuinely embarrassing. When a goal is scored, the camera often pans to the center of the pitch or some random patch of grass, completely missing the goal itself, so you're celebrating alone while the camera stares at nothing. At kickoff, when you request a pass, your AI teammate will sometimes launch the ball toward the corner flag for absolutely no reason, like they're playing a different sport entirely. And the commentators frequently discuss the wrong team while the lineup graphics are being shown, which is jarring and breaks any sense of immersion. These are just the obvious issues I spotted immediately.
The actual gameplay doesn't feel significantly different from what I remember playing nearly two decades ago. The AI is frustratingly stupid, especially the defenders. My teammates often stand completely still, watching opponents dribble right past them, forcing me to sprint back and clean up their mess. It's exhausting and takes all the fun out of the game.
Career Mode itself is repetitive and boring to the point of being a chore. Take the social media feed feature, for example you see the same generic faces in the same stiff poses over and over again. Almost all coaches use generic models too, with only a handful of big names getting any real attention. I can't say if it's always been this way, but it screams absolute low effort from the developers.
On the positive side, the graphics and presentation look decent on the surface, and Player Career has a nice concept even if the execution is poor. There are occasional fun moments in gameplay despite the flaws, and if you find it on sale, it's decent value, but only if you're prepared for the issues.
But overall, I wanted to give FC 25 a fair shot after all these years away from the franchise, and honestly, it's been a disappointing return. If you're strictly into Ultimate Team, maybe you'll find something to enjoy, but for anyone who actually wants a polished Career Mode experience, this ain't it. It's a mess on and off the pitch, and it feels like EA just doesn't care unless you're spending real money on packs. I'll be putting this one down sooner than I expected.
