A game that scares and traumatizes
The first time I finished this game, I couldn't stop thinking about it. Honestly, I felt a bit traumatised. Outlast 2 is easily the most gruesome game I've ever played, but that's not what stuck with me. What really got under my skin were the themes: child abuse, child suicide, and other deeply uncomfortable subjects that are far more disturbing than any amount of gore or viscera could ever be.
This is not a game for everyone and I want to be clear about that from the beginning. But if you're here because you want to be scared it is a right choice. You're in for a very satisfying experience.
That said, the level design is a bit less intuitive than the first Outlast. I found myself stumbling around more than once, unsure of where to go next, and that often led to death. But maybe that's just me. I'm sure there are plenty of players out there who navigated the game far more smoothly than I did.
Like its predecessor, Outlast 2 gives you no weapons. Your only options are to run and hide, and that formula continues to work brilliantly. It's terrifying, it's tense, and it never lets you feel safe for more than a moment.
All in all, I love this game. It's brutal, it's heavy, and it left a mark on me. If you've got a strong stomach and you're ready for something that will stick with you long after the credits roll, you might just love it too.
