From beginner to experienced player
I picked this up on a friend's recommendation, and I'll be honest, i did not get it at all when I first started. I was just clicking on things, hoping something would happen. Most of my early hours were spent playing with my friend so I could pepper them with questions. Sure, I had small victories here and there, but I never really understood what I was doing or why anything mattered.

Then one day, I booted up the game and decided to actually give it a proper shot. I watched a few CK3 YouTube videos before diving back in, and I read up on some basic strategies. I started as a humble Duke, and I actually took my time. I read every pop up carefully. I looked up words and phrases I didn't understand.

My Duke had a son. That son became a King. Descendant after descendant, my realm grew richer and more powerful. Eventually, I had enough money to bribe anyone who stood in my way. Before I knew it, it was 3AM, and I had been elected Holy Roman Emperor, thanks to my economic power, my prestige, and a whole lot of gold changing hands. With one click, I revoked the election laws. Yeah, there was resistance from my vassals, but those are problems that money or a good spymaster can solve. I was at the top of the world. I had clawed my way from a nobody Duke to the most powerful man in Europe.

Here's the thing about this game. You don't play as a country or a kingdom. You play as a ruler. And when that ruler dies, you become their heir. And if nobody likes that heir? If they're incompetent, weak, or just plain hated? Empires crumble. You can sometimes fix this by changing succession laws, disinheriting heirs, or killing them. This game is brutal. I had one son. I took a gamble, I died too soon, and my empire fell apart because my heir was an idiot that nobody liked, and our neighbors smelled blood in the water.

When it was all over, the Holy Roman Empire was gone. I was broke, incompetent, inbred, had no allies, and owned a tiny patch of land hundreds of miles from where I started. But holy hell, what a ride. Straight to the top and a plummet to the bottom, and I loved every second of it.

That was the playthrough where it finally clicked. The replay value is insane, and I know I'll be coming back for more. I have so much respect for this game now. CK3 can be punishing, but it can also be incredibly rewarding. It will overwhelm you at first. It will eat your time. But I absolutely recommend you give it a chance : one, two, maybe three. Be curious. Read the tooltips. Follow the game's advice. It's a good time.
