I originally planned to write something short and cheesy for this review, but something happened recently that made me appreciate this game on a whole new level.
I had to move away from my gaming PC and switch to a compact, lightweight laptop without a dedicated GPU. I braced myself for the worst, massive slowdowns, blurry textures, turn times so long I could cook a meal in between. But somehow, the developers have worked some kind of magic on this game. The optimization is fantastic, and there are so many UI and graphical options that I never encountered the problems I was so afraid of. Animations still play smoothly. Turn times are perfectly fine. My worst fears never materialized.
In fact, the only real downside to the game is that they removed my favorite feature from Civilization V: the ability to use my gaming laptop as a makeshift space heater during those freezing dorm winters. That feature alone got me through so many cold nights.
I've spent about a hundreds hours on this game. I'd say every single second of that was worth it, but I really do need to figure out how to stop playing before the birds start chirping and the sun starts creeping through my window
One word of advice, wait for a sale. The base game is reasonably priced, but once you factor in all the DLCs, the full price will financially destroy you.
