Coming from modern games with their hand holding tutorials, shiny graphics, and menus that explain everything, this game was a shock to the system. At first, a lot of it turned me away. It felt clunky, dated, and unwelcoming. But I gave it my time and it was not kind to me. Brutal is the word I would use.

You don't feel like a hero here. No one gives you anything. There are no menus listing all the skills or items you can get. you have to go out and find that stuff on your own. It's harsh, it's punishing, and it's absolutely amazing.

Every time I sat down to play, I liked it more and more. Each session was more fun than the last. Each time, I felt more immersed in this strange, hostile world. And every time I stopped playing, that feeling of "I can't wait to get back in" grew stronger. Eventually, I was completely obsessed with everything about this game.

As I played, I started noticing similarities and features that I recognised from other, more modern games. A little research confirmed what I suspected: this game influenced so many titles that went on to become huge successes. Entire towns from Gothic seem to have inspired towns in other games. It honestly feels like this game could have been a turning point for the open-world genre and a lot of games we know and love might not exist in the same way without it.

Coming from someone who has never played anything quite this old and dated, someone used to all the shiny, polished stuff out there – I can say this: this game is better. I genuinely can't think of a single game released in the last ten years that had me this excited to play every day. This game literally gave me butterflies while I was at work, just thinking about getting home and diving back in. It's been a long time since a game made me feel that way.

I'm sad it's over. But I'm excited to dive into the rest of this developer's work, even though I hear it's not quite as good as this one.

If you love a challenge and deep immersion, get this game. I couldn't recommend any game to anyone more than I recommend this. Give it your time and patience, and it will show you one of the best gaming experiences you've ever had.
