If you want to complete this game, read my review and choose the appropriate profession.
Having just completed Gothic 1 and Gothic 2: Night of the Raven, I went into Gothic 3 with some trepidation, but honestly, I ended up having an extremely fun time. But there's a catch: I played as a magic caster and I turned off Alternative Balancing and Advanced AI. If you're planning to play as a ranged or melee character, be warned, because the combat is rough. Ranged combat with arrows or bolts is a nightmare thanks to dodgy hitboxes, and melee is just completely broken. You'll be stun locked constantly, so save often and save before every fight.

That said, Gothic 3 takes the awful magic system from the first two games and actually makes it viable. It's almost ironic, magic finally works, but melee really suffers for it.

Without spoiling too much, I took the neutral stance. I didn't turn in the 12 fire chalices, and I didn't side with anyone far enough to liberate cities. You're presented with three directions: you can side with Innos, Beliar, or a third option that Xardas explains later. The game kicks off during the battle of Ardea, and you're reunited with the old crew, but they split off pretty quickly. You're introduced to the Rebels right away, but try to keep an open mind if you want to get the most out of the experience. There's no way back to your ship, so you're forced to adapt and become part of the chaos sweeping across the land.

The game feels much more open world than its predecessors. There are no chapters, and beasts respawn after a while, which is nice for hunting. You can visit any city at any time and start working on quests, or you can do the bare minimum to finish the main story. You can learn spells for all the gods, brew potions, cook food, and equip loads of items. There's genuinely a lot to do in Gothic 3, and it's well worth the time.

I'd give it a 7/10, but only because I played as a mage. If I'd stuck with the melee playstyle I originally planned, I probably wouldn't have finished the game.
✅ Pro:
  • Big open world
  • Magic is fun to use
  • Lots of freedom
  • Alchemy, cooking, and crafting add much content
❌ Contro:
  • Melee combat is broken
  • Terrible hitboxes
  • Stunlocks are common
  • Needs patches
