A charming platformer that takes us back to the old days
Picked up this game and thoroughly enjoyed it. If you're a fan of 3D platformers from the last decade or so, chances are you'll enjoy it too.

The movement in this game has some obvious comparisons. Odyssey comes to mind, but Big Hops iterates on that formula and makes some clever innovations of its own. Being able to pick up and interact with objects using your tongue is a game changer, especially when it comes to fiddly ground items that are usually a pain to deal with in other platformers.

Levels are large enough to let you really chew on a theme, but compact enough that they never outstay their welcome. The difficulty is balanced just right, challenging enough that you won't breeze through, but forgiving enough that you won't get stuck for too long. There are side quests and collectibles scattered around if you want to dive deeper into an area, but you're never forced to stick around if you're not feeling it.

The problem solving is particularly fun. Your tools respawn infinitely, and you gain the ability to carry spares fairly early on. You can even save your favourites and pull them out whenever you need them, which really cuts down on the frustration of getting stuck, a feeling that's all too common in this genre. It also makes you feel genuinely clever when you solve a puzzle the "wrong" way.

That said, the game isn't flawless.

I ran into two soft lock scenarios during my playthrough. In one, I was able to hurl myself off a cliff repeatedly to restart; in the other, I had to quit to the title screen to reload the area. Neither took longer than a minute to recover from, but they were still a bit jarring.

Targeting specific objects with your tongue can also be tricky, especially when there are multiple targets in the area. There were times when I knew exactly what I needed to do, but executing it was tedious enough that restarting the level felt like the easier option. I think the game would really benefit from a "Restart from Last Checkpoint" button.

The coins, dyes, and veggie crafting system also left something to be desired. I only engaged with these systems lightly and didn't notice a huge impact on core gameplay throughout my run. They're interesting ideas, but they feel undercooked, I'd love to see them expanded upon in future DLC or updates.

It’s an easy recommend in general for anyone looking for a fun platformer with satisfying movement tech and a unique twist. It’s not perfect, but it is charming, inventive and worth your time.
