A charming climb with a few control quirks
You start off with even less mobility than you might expect. Movement feels limited, deliberate, and a little clumsy at first. But as you progress, you unlock a handful of useful upgrades that gradually open up the world. The map is dotted with checkpoint and respawn bells, along with optional gold coins that need to be banked at a bell. The game rarely asks you to survive more than a few screens of danger between these safe points, which keeps things manageable.

The world is split into several regions, each built around a specific mechanic. Every region houses one upgrade and ends with a challenging trial that puts your mastery of that new ability to the test.

You can actually finish a basic clear by exploring only a small portion of the map, which means a large chunk of the game is completely optional. I chose to take on the trial gauntlets and collect every coin, but I'm perfectly happy not attempting a deathless run. That level of challenge is there if you want it, but it never feels required.

That said, I did find a few aspects of the movement tricky to get used to:

When you jump to a vine or ladder and try to grab on, there's nothing that dampens your horizontal momentum. It's very easy to slip right off until you learn to release your directional input at just the right moment.

The mobility system relies on snapping your character to a specific row of tiles and even with practice, it seems to demand a lot of precision to reliably snap to the row you actually want.

Once you unlock controlled descent, anything more than a brief tap will send you plummeting straight down, which usually means death in the very areas where you'd want to use that ability.

Despite these control quirks, the game is incredibly charming overall. There are a few cheeky gotchas designed to make sure you're paying attention, but it never feels mean spirited or punishing for the sake of it. The map is also just small enough that backtracking for missed coins never felt like a chore, which is a blessing for completionists like me.
✅ Plusy:
  • Charming pixel art
  • Satisfying progression through upgrades
  • Well placed checkpoints
❌ Minusy:
  • Movement is finicky
  • Ladder grabbing takes practice to get right
  • Some players will be frustrating while gaming
