I absolutely love this game and I also suck at it. I always focus way too much on exploration and having a good time building up a powerful set of systems, and I always end up missing some key factor that lets the other Civilizations beat me to the punch.
But you know what? I still have a blast. And that's a great quality in any game, the ability to have fun even when you're a complete tool like me. The planet variety is brilliant. here are so many worlds to discover and colonise that you just get obsessed with uncovering every last one. Anomalies to adapt around and benefit from, each with their own quirks. The galaxy is a huge place, and every facet feels like something waiting to be discovered.
The combat is incredibly good-looking when you observe, at least the space battles are. You can see your ships, with every module you've installed, engaging the enemy fleet with the tactics you've assigned them. The ground battles are less impressive, though still somewhat tactical, with a more 2D display. Personally, I'd have liked a little more player influence over how your ships and troops look, but that in no way deducts from the experience. I'm just a weirdo who likes cosmetics. Each civilisation has its own ship designs, some unique modules, and even different strategies.
The most incredible addition, in my opinion, is the quest system. Each Civ has its own main questline with powerful, unique rewards that make a massive difference. The story is rich too, interesting characters, heroes and I also wish the heroes had their own quests to give them unique perks or something. Nevertheless, it's still an excellent addition, and even the animations on the heroes look great.
The distinctness of the civilisations is a massive improvement over the original, though that does come with a little sadness, some civs, like the Pilgrims, have been reduced to minor civilisations. I'd love to play as several of the minor civs; they seem just as interesting as the rest. Back to distinctness, each civilisation has its own questlines, as I mentioned, but they also have unique playstyles for the most part. They all often use the same resources, but the way they spread control, develop planets, and especially the political system, all of that makes them feel very different from one another.
My suggestion to new players? Start with the United Empire, or possibly my favourite, the Lumeris, as they have the most balanced playstyles. The Sophons are a good choice too, a powerful science based civilisation. Honestly, just try them all, find what you like, and conquer the galaxy!
You'll lose hours and hours to this wonderful game. It's wonderful if you like a challenge in your 4X games, it's great if you love exploring an interesting galaxy, and it's fantastic if you enjoy discovering stories in a unique world. I look forward to seeing what the devs have in store for us, hopefully good things! More Civs, more heroes, more quests. Even if that fails, the community will be behind it too. The best thing about PC gaming, ladies and germs. Buy it, share it, conquer all!
