This is an overwhelmingly flashy retro shooter with RPG elements, buckets of style, and more cool ideas than it knows what to do with. That's the short version, but honestly, it gives you a pretty good idea of what you're in for: frenetic gameplay, an absurd number of weapons to choose from, fun abilities, constant progression, and so many enemies and maps it's almost hard to believe. It's a lot, but in a good way.
What I really want to emphasize is the sheer amount of content. Every time you move from one level to the next, the game lets you choose which boss you'll face next, which makes it surprisingly easy to have completely different playthroughs each time.
Now for the complicated part, the bosses are horrible. Even on normal difficulty, most of them are incredibly tanky and packed with "gimmicks" that don't make the fights interesting, just longer. And by the later levels, the game just throws so many enemies at you that your only options are to either cheese them strategically or just tank through millions of bullets while chugging heals. Neither feels great.
Also the game is way too chaotic and visually cluttered. Between all the effects, explosions, floating text, and particle spam, you can barely see what's happening on screen. Some weapons are almost unusable because the bullets fire from your eyes instead of the weapon itself, it's genuinely headache inducing at times. I know it sounds weird, but I seriously recommend turning off some of these effects in the settings, kill text, excessive blood, screen shake – to make the whole thing at least somewhat bearable.
I remember playing this in early access and thinking it was cool. Now it's even cooler in some ways, but also weighed down by more things that kind of tone down the overall experience. It's still enjoyable and definitely stands out from the usual fare in the genre, so I'd still recommend giving it a try.
