A fun fishing game
Cast N Chill is exactly what it says on the tin, a beautifully designed, relaxed pixel art fishing adventure that totally nails the cozy feeling better than most games in the genre. The graphics are beautiful in their simplicity and the environments are full of charm and peaceful ambiance. It's one of those rare games where you can just exist in the world and enjoy the flow of things. The light banjo tune that plays when you catch a fish, the birds chirping, the sound effects is perfect.
I beat the game and earned every achievement in just under 20 hours, and honestly, I loved every minute of it. It doesn't try to be something it's not. It's a chill, focused experience that never overstays its welcome. It's not difficult, but there's a satisfying technique to mastering it.
There's a logbook of every fish and where to find them. There are multiple rods, lures, boats, and fishing licences you can purchase with the money you earn from your catches. Each licence unlocks a new location to fish. The concept is simple and satisfying. You and your dog catch your bag limit, return to the dock, sell your haul, and save up for your next upgrade. It's a loop that just works. For me, time absolutely flew by while playing.
It's one of those games where you say, "Just one more cast," and next thing you know, it's 45 minutes later. Or you tell yourself, "I'm just going to catch these last two fish and hop off," but now you have enough money to unlock the next location, and there's no way you're going to bed without seeing what it looks like.
Also, having the dog companion was such a nice touch. I found myself petting him constantly without even thinking about it. It sounds silly, but if you play the game, you'll get it. And yes, there's a cat companion in the DLC if that's more your style.
Now, about the people leaving bad reviews. Most of them barely gave the game a chance or were expecting a deep open world RPG disguised as a fishing sim. That's on them, not the game. Downplaying something this charming and well made because it's "too simple" or "not enough content" completely misses the point. Not every game needs to be 100+ hours long and overly complex to be worth playing.
If you're even remotely into pixel art, cozy vibes, or just need a break from your usual library, Cast N Chill is an absolute win.
