Worse sequel, but still fun to play
Dying Light 2 is a good game. But it's not a great one and honestly, that's disappointing, because the first game was so much better in almost every single department.

The parkour in DL2 is fantastic. It's smoother, more fluid, and genuinely fun to traverse the world with. The Central Loop is an absolute playground for parkour enthusiasts, and they absolutely nailed that part. But outside of that? DL1 wins, hands down.

Let's talk combat, because this is where the difference is most noticeable. In DL1, I used to run around even at max level, just killing zombies for an hour because it was fun. The combat felt weighty, realistic, and satisfying. When you hit a zombie, your weapon rebounded off them like you were actually hitting a person. They stumbled, they reacted, they grabbed you if you got too close. It felt dynamic and alive. In DL2? I actively avoid combat. It just doesn't feel good. You slash straight through enemies like you're barely grazing them. There's no weight, no impact. Human combat is better, sure, but even that feels weird and floaty.

And the zombies themselves? They're exist. They walk toward you, take hits without reacting, and don't feel threatening at all. In DL1, zombies felt like they actually wanted to kill you. They were reactive, aggressive, and the ragdoll physics made every encounter feel unique and chaotic. Dismemberment and decapitations only happen on the last hit or with a crit, so the gore feels less dynamic and more like a chore.

The atmosphere is another area where DL1 completely outshines its sequel. Harran was gritty, depressing, and palpable. The slums felt murky and oppressive, Old Town felt refined but still carried that same weight. You could hear virals screaming in the distance as you ran across rooftops, narrowly avoiding the zombies below. It felt alive. DL2's Villedor and Central Loop? They look great, sure, but they feel static and lifeless. It's a playground for parkour. And don't even get me started on the nights. DL1's nights were genuinely terrifying. In DL2? You can casually stroll around at street level without breaking a sweat. Chases are so easy to escape it's almost laughable. You have to go out of your way to get a high-level chase. Where's the tension?

The zombies took a backseat in this game. It feels less like a zombie game and more like a post-apocalyptic sandbox with zombies thrown in for ambiance. In DL1, you could feel the impact zombies had on the world, random events, characters talking about the threat, missions that showed you firsthand how dangerous they were. DL2 doesn't have any of that. The people don't seem oppressed or concerned by zombies.

And the story? Honestly, it's not good. The characters felt more irritating than compelling. The plot was nonsensical at times and felt like a slog to get through. DL1's story wasn't great either, but at least it felt more serious, more grounded. I actually cared a little about the characters. I can't say the same for DL2.

So after all that negativity, why am I still saying it's an okay game? Because the parkour is genuinely excellent. The world is beautiful. And if you can look past the combat, the story, and the weaker atmosphere, there's still fun to be had. But for anyone who loved the first game, it's hard not to feel let down.
