I honestly didn't expect the sequel to be this good. The jump in quality between the first game and the second one is absolutely insane. I can't even imagine how impressive this must have been 23 years ago. You can really see how the additional funding from Rockstar helped refine and polish everything to a shine.
I'm not exaggerating when I say the gunplay in this one is incredibly satisfying and badass. The newly added ragdoll physics make every shootout feel dynamic and weighty. I've heard some people say the physics engine aged badly, but I honestly don't think that's true at all. It still holds up surprisingly well today.
You also don't need to quicksave nearly as much anymore. The game is slightly easier than the first one, at least on the default difficulty. But I can see it not being everyone’s cup of tea, especially if you’re looking for that same brutal challenge on your first run.
What about the story? I'd say it's an improvement overall, though I still can't fully decide which game I prefer. In terms of storytelling, though, I have to give the point to the second installment. The story presentation is much better, half of the cutscenes are rendered in real time, and Max no longer has that goofy grin on his face throughout the whole game. It's a small change, but it makes a huge difference.
I also really liked the little TV shows that play throughout the story, and all the bits of side content scattered around. The homeless guy in the jail who pukes twice? Absolute gold. Small details like that show the developers' passion and add a lot of charm to the overall experience.
What are the downsides? The game is way too short. But considering it was developed in only about a year, that's actually very impressive. Also, the enemy AI sometimes accidentally kills itself with grenades. It was kind of funny and luckily never game breaking, though I've never heard anyone else mention it, so maybe it was just my playstyle.
In some sections of the game, I was slightly confused about how to continue. It actually requires you to use your brain. That's a good thing in my book.
How's the Steam PC port? It's okay. The game runs out of the box and is completely playable. I just added the Widescreen Fix and capped the framerate at 60 FPS, because the shootdodge mechanic can glitch at higher frame rates.
Would I recommend playing this game? Yes, absolutely. It's a timeless classic and a must play if you enjoy third person shooters or love the Matrix movies. It's stylish, it's action packed, and it's proof that great game design doesn't age.
