I skipped this one at launch, but the idea of an open-world zombie game where zombies actually stay dead, no respawning hordes, no endless magic spawns. Finally pulled me in with the new update. And honestly? I'm so glad I waited.
There's something incredibly satisfying about being able to thin out the crowds and eventually clear entire routes and areas of zombies, making travel easier and safer. It completely changes the way you approach the game. Beast Mode stops being just a simple limit break and becomes a strategic resource, something you want to activate specifically to wipe out a whole mob quickly and permanently. "Earning" the ability to move around freely, to walk down empty streets you've cleared yourself, feels amazing. Seeing your actions have consequences, one zombie at a time, is genuinely rewarding. Every zombie game should take notes. I don't need a scripted jump scare every fifteen seconds to stay entertained. I want to make the dangerous world safe.
The new survival elements are pretty well balanced, though I should warn you: the game does nothing to prevent you from getting softlocked. As soon as you get into the open world after the tutorial, make sure you stockpile some batteries, food, and bandages before you start chasing main story quests. Eventually, you'll have more than enough of everything, and eating periodically becomes more of a chore than a challenge, but the tension leading up to that point is a lot of fun.
Overall, this update has completely transformed the game for me. What I was happy to skip at launch has become a total obsession. I'm now desperately hoping that the team, or some brave modde goes back and adds some form of zombie permadeath to the previous games in the series. Because this is the new standard for zombie games, as far as I'm concerned.
